News Release: Small Washroom Fire Extinguished Immediately at Timberlea Public - No Injuries

(Fort McMurray, AB - February 11, 2021) At about 8:45 a.m. Timberlea Public School office was called by a teacher to report smoke. Upon investigation, it was quickly determined some toilet paper had been ignited and was smouldering in the washroom. It was immediately extinguished, however, smoke was still visible in the washroom and the adjacent hallway for a short time.

To ensure the safety of students and staff, and to minimize the anxiety of all involved, grade 3-6 classrooms evacuated to the school gymnasium, library, and atrium. All students and staff returned to their classrooms at 10:00 a.m. It is unfortunate that this incident resulted in an interruption to school programming, but for the safety and security of everyone in our building, emergency procedures were followed as per FMPSD protocols.

“At no time were students in any danger, and I am very proud of the way that our students and staff handled themselves during this incident,” said Waleed Najmeddine, Principal, Timberlea Public School.

“I encourage you to talk to your children about the importance of emergency procedures and safe behaviour. Additionally, we understand that the thought of fire may raise specific concerns for students, staff, or families. We had our counselling staff respond to the school to offer support. If you feel you require additional support or assistance for your child regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to reach out. You may also find additional resources on our Division mental health website. Thank you for everything you do for your children and for Timberlea Public School,” he added.
